Listening to the music of ocean waves was one of the most magical experiences on my entire trip.
In Zadar, Croatian architect Nikola Basic designed an instrument that doubled as a public art installation. Underneath the marble steps, the natural movement of the waves pushed air through a network of tubes, similar to how air is blown through a harmonica, creating a reedy melody.
It was a remarkable piece of art for its ability to inspire appreciation of the timelessness of the flow of water. When I listened, the musical notes seemed to have no direction from a beginning to an end. The sounds came and went according to the tide of the waves, which rocked in and out in constant motion. I felt a deep contentedness and peace, knowing that the waves would keep on rocking until the end of the world, and that there was a beauty in that, which made my troubles seem trifling and small.
I thought about how in most of my life, I was always moving to keep up, from school to work and even during my travels. Here, I could learn how to be still.
